Enjoy being picked up at your city accommodation and travel to the Great Southern Railway Parkland Terminal to view the world famous train "The Ghan" getting prepared for its midday departure. Take the opportunity to take a photo or two or visit the terminal shop to purchase a gift.

 

Next board the Iconic Glenelg tram and travel to the birth place of South Australia. On arrival inspect the old 1920's built tram and replica of the historic sailing ship "The Buffalo" on the foreshore of Glenelg.

 

Travel north along the coast enjoying views of the St Vincents Gulf. Continue past the Grange railway station to arrive in the historic Port Adelaide area.

Spend an hour or so exploring Australia’s largest undercover railway museum, the National Railway Museum and step back in time as you visit some of the trains that made the Australian railways famous. Walk through old carriages, jump aboard the cabs of some of the old steam locomotives or go for a ride on the 18 inch gauge railway.

Home to no less than 5 gauges of railway and exhibits, the National Railway Museum is truly a world class museum with displays, exhibits and a collection like no other museum within Australia. Enjoy seeing broad, standard and narrow gauge history and rollingstock from the South Australian Railways, The Commonwealth Railways, Australian National Railways and many more. 

Enjoy lunch around the old heritage wharf precinct of “The Port”, home to many cafes, pubs, restaurants and other attractions, even a weekend market. 

After lunch travel out of Port Adelaide and head North to the Dry Creek area to possibly catch a view of The Ghan on its journey to Alice Springs and Darwin.

 

Continuing along Port Wakefield Road we shortly arrive at the St Kilda Tramway Museum, home to a large collection of South Australian and national trams. Enjoy a tour around the museum prior to boarding one of their many restored historic trams for a ride along the tramway to the St Kilda coastline.

 

Travel back to the museum and enjoy riding on other preserved trams or enjoy the St Kilda playground and mangroves walk.

Mid afternoon travel back to the city of Adelaide viewing other railway infrastructure along the way. Be dropped back at your hotel or city accommodation.
